1972

The camera becomes the darkroom.

The SX-70 does not merely expose instant film. It ejects the sheet through matched rollers, spreads reagent between its layers, and borrows its operating power from the battery inside each film pack. Its folding reflex path lets the photographer focus through the same 116 mm lens that makes the picture, then collapses the mechanism into a slab.

Design consequence: film chemistry, optical path, power supply, and industrial design have to agree before the shutter button can exist.

1997

The camera learns to disappear.

The µ[mju:]-II hides a bright 35 mm ƒ/2.8 lens behind a sliding weather-resistant clamshell. Opening that cover powers the camera and extends a nested optical barrel; closing it retracts the lens into a body barely larger than the film cassette it carries.

Design consequence: focus, exposure, flash, film advance, and protection become one gesture. The photographer’s job is mostly to have the camera nearby.

2018

The sensor becomes the camera’s nervous system.

The α7 III meters, focuses, previews exposure, recognizes motion, records the image, and supplies both displays from one full-frame sensor plane. A five-axis suspension moves that plane against hand shake while the E-mount exchanges focus, aperture, and correction data with an 18-element zoom.

Design consequence: modern immediacy is computational. The optical machine remains, but software now negotiates every moving part.
